A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding in Guinea-Bissau

Our emergency field assessment team is currently on the ground in Guinea-Bissau, visiting some of the country’s most vulnerable communities to understand the scale of humanitarian need. What we have witnessed is heartbreaking.

The situation is far more severe than many could imagine. Families are struggling to survive without basic necessities, and urgent humanitarian intervention is needed to prevent further suffering.

What We Witnessed

As our team traveled from village to village, visiting homes and speaking directly with families, one reality became painfully clear:

Approximately 70% of the households we visited had no food left.

Kitchen shelves were empty. Food containers were empty. Parents sat helplessly, unable to prepare even a single meal for their children.

Behind every door was a story of hardship, resilience, and hope against impossible circumstances.

A Moment We Will Never Forget

One encounter will remain with us forever.

We met several families who had carefully kept half-rotten rice, planning to wash it and cook it the next day because it was the only food they had left.

They knew it was unsafe.

They knew it could make their children sick.

Yet hunger had left them with no alternative.

No mother or father should ever be forced to choose between starvation and feeding their children spoiled food.

By the mercy of Allah and through the generosity of our donors, these families received emergency food assistance before they were forced to eat food that could have caused serious illness.

Together, we were able to deliver more than food.

We delivered:

• Emergency food supplies
• Hope to struggling families
• Dignity to those living through hardship
• Relief from the fear of another hungry night
• A reminder that they are not forgotten

The Faces Behind the Crisis

Throughout our assessment, we met:

• Elderly people quietly enduring days without sufficient food.
• Widows doing everything possible to care for their children.
• Parents skipping meals so their children could eat.
• Families who had nearly lost hope of receiving any assistance.

Every conversation reminded us that behind every statistic is a human life.

Beyond Hunger: The Need for Safe Water

Food insecurity is only one part of the crisis.

Many communities also face severe shortages of safe drinking water, increasing the risk of disease and making daily life even more difficult.

Access to clean water is essential for protecting health, especially for children, the elderly, and vulnerable families.

The humanitarian crisis in Guinea-Bissau is far from over.
